Thelton Hall Publishing : The Journey Recalled: A Memoir of Marjorie Frances Hill

The Journey Recalled recounts the memories of Marjorie Frances Hill, as told to Thel Spencer. This hardcover volume includes many endearing photos, sketches, and poems. It also features 40 of Marge Hill's watercolor paintings. "While Momma and Grandma visited with friends over coffee, I sat in my corner seemingly absorbed in cutting scraps and pasting with grandma-provided flour and water paste, but I hardly missed or forgot a grownup word. Now I marvel at how many words I retained before I understood their meaning. When the women discussed our landlady they talked about her brother, Tom Dennison, and referred to him as 'Omaha's political boss.' German-born John, our cobbler, had a son who was a well-known 'gangster.' Another neighbor they referred to as a 'bootlegger.' The unexpected birth of a baby to our neighbor Mrs. Watts was explained by noting that Mrs. Watts (past child-bearing age) had thought she had a 'tumor.' Mrs. Watts' youngest daughter, Jean, four years older than I, was my adored playmate. Later the unexpected baby boy Jackie joined us in our favorite game of 'Hide the Thimble.' The first dog I ever knew belonged to the Watts family. His name was 'Princey Oh-Oh.' One time sitting with my friend Dorothy, also a four-year-old, I imparted some newly-acquired information. I said, 'I'm an American.' 'Well,' Dorothy replied, 'I'm something like that - I'm a Catholic.'"
